Air Astana president and CEO Peter Foster commented (20-Jul-2016) that the regional macro-economic environment "has been and continues to be extremely challenging for all airlines". Air Astana experienced a "steep drop in revenue, particularly on domestic routes" during 1H2016, according to Mr Foster, but has managed to compensate "to a large extent" by further reducing unit cost and by "substantially" increasing international transit traffic between Europe and Asia. The carrier has also struggled with the significant devaluation of the Kazakh Tenge in comparison with 1H2015, and by weaker regional travel markets in the wake of commodity price falls. Further development of transit business "over our Astana and Almaty hubs continues to be a priority” said Mr Foster
