Barcelona-Mexico City, the strategic objective of the BARDC, is already a reality!!

• The new international connection is part of the 5 cities target of the Strategic Plan of the CDRA 2018-2019.
• Aeromexico will connect with three weekly flights Barcelona – Mexico City with a Boieng 787 Dreamliner.
• This route will increase the flow of traffic of 90,000 passengers that currently fly indirectly between Barcelona and Mexico.

Barcelona, ​​June 19, 2019 – Barcelona – México city is the new international connection that will operate today at the Josep Tarradellas – Barcelona El Prat Airport. The destination is part of the 5 cities target of the Strategic Plan of the CDRA 2018-2019 (Committee of Development of Routes of the Airport of Barcelona, ​​the promotion promotion center integrated by the Chamber of Barcelona, ​​the Generalitat de Catalunya, Ajuntament de Barcelona and AENA). Last year, the connection between Barcelona and Mexico City had a movement of 90,000 O&D indirect passengers (Source: MIDT).

Aeroméxico is the only Mexican company with presence in Europe. The Catalan capital becomes the fifth destination of the company in Europe and the second in Spain. The new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft that will offer the journey between the two capitals has the latest developments in the sector to improve the passenger’s experience, such as the Free Messaging system that will allow passengers to send and receive messages at no additional cost in main social networks.

Strong ties of international trade

The commercial relationship between Catalonia and Mexico has always been important. Mexico is the first destination for air cargo exports from Barcelona. Specifically, Barcelona’s air cargo  exports to Mexico City during 2017 were 3,752 tonnes, representing 12% of total Spanish exports.

Also, during the last years the commercial relations between the two cities have been increasing to the point of reaching a record number of € 1,338 M in 2017. The main sectors that are exported to Mexico are vehicles (19%) , machinery (13.4%) and textiles (9.1%). Quantitatively, Catalan exports represent 29.1% of exports from Spain to Mexico. With regard to imports, the Mexican market has also increased in recent years and has reached the figure of 540 M € in 2017, 13.3% of imports from Spain to Mexico. The main imported sectors are fuels (31.2%), vehicles (27%) and chemical products (7%).

It must be added that in Mexico there are 757 subsidiaries of 373 Catalan companies and in Catalonia 59 Mexican subsidiaries of 25 Mexican companies. The Mexican community in Catalonia and Mexican emissive tourism 25% (6,558) of the 24,000 Mexican residents in the State live in Barcelona, ​​practically the same volume as in Madrid. The majority profiles are students, qualified professionals and / or relatives, according to data from the INE 2018. Likewise, more than 450,000 Mexican tourists a year arrive in Spain of which 86,000 (19.1%) had Catalonia as the main destination with an average cost of € 2,500 per person (INE, 2017).
