Barcelona, recognized as the top Southern European city with future economic potential
2012-03-28 14:49:42

This is one of the conclusions drawn from the report "fDi Cities and Regions of the Future 2012/2013".

Barcelona occupies overall first place among the cities of Southern Europe. This is one of the conclusions drawn from the study fDi Cities and Regions of the Future 2012/2013.

This report, published by the magazine fDi of the Financial Times, annually compares 253 cities and 110 European regions and produces a ranking based on a set of indicators regarding the following competitivity factors: economic potential, cost/effectiveness, human resources, quality of life, infrastructures, business friendliness and foreign development investment promotion strategy.

Sònia Recasens, Deputy Mayor of Barcelona and responsible for the area of Economy, Business and Employment at Barcelona City Council, stated that "this news shows that we are on the right track and encourages us to carry on working to join efforts and make Barcelona an engine of economic renovation".

In this respect she also referred to the work being carried out by the initiative 'Barcelona Creixement', ('Barcelona Growth'), promoted by the city council, the objectives of which include projecting the city internationally and establishing it as a destination and origin of business activity.

Moving up in the ranking of foreign investment promotion
As regards the fDi report, it should be pointed out that the Catalan capital and the rest of Catalonia are progressing in international consideration in terms of foreign development investment promotion strategy. In this respect, Barcelona occupies fourth place in the global ranking, while Catalonia moves up from 10th to 2nd position.

With respect to Southern Europe, Barcelona and Catalonia have moved up the ladder to first place in terms of foreign investment promotion in this geographical area.

Among the top 25 cities

In the overall ranking, Barcelona stands at position 22 and the region of Catalonia at 19 among the top 25 cities and European regions –respectively– in terms of its future potential.

The report highlights the Catalan capital as the only Mediterranean city and the only city within the Spanish State that appears among the top 25 European cities. In other areas, such as in human resources, Barcelona occupies a noteworthy 8th position among the big European cities and 10th position concerning business and infrastructure.

Barcelona plays a key role as economic liaison between Asia and Latin America
2012-03-28 14:59:01

The Asian and Latin American continents are areas which are growing rapidly, in comparison to the current crisis which can be seen in developed economies.

On 22 March, Casa Asia and the INSEAD business school presented the study "Spain's role in the economic ties between Asia and Latin America. Large corporations, SMEs and Barcelona city as the liaising elements between the two areas", with the aim to create awareness on the potential of Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain as the link between these two continents.

The report, which includes collaboration from Barcelona City Council, Garrigues and the Pompeu Fabra University, states that Asia and Latin America are the areas with the most growth within the current crisis which is present in developed economies and analyses the role played by the cities, especially Barcelona, as bridges and centres for economic development and as possible headquarters for Asian and Latin American companies.

Sònia Recasens, Deputy Mayor for the Economy, Business and Employment of Barcelona City Council, highlighted that "our companies have the challenge and opportunity to establish and take advantage of all these synergies created with Latin America and Asia, especially with China". Recasens added that "we have to be capable of attracting investment and economic activity from strategic markets, such as China or India, towards Barcelona, in order to obtain good positioning within Latin America".

Eleven success stories, half of which are linked to the Catalonian capital

The study also reflects on the degree to which Spain has acted as a bridge between Asia and Latin America, and includes the experiences of several Spanish companies, half of which are linked to the Catalonian capital, and are currently trading on both continents.

The analysed companies are: Farmaegara, Ficosa Internacional, Miguel Torres S.A., Port de Barcelona, Singapore Arilines (these five are linked to  Barcelona), Alfa Hogar, BBVA, Repsol YPF, Cemex, Garrigues and Telefónica. These are companies of different sizes and from different sectors, but all of them perform a liaison function and may be an example to follow for other SMEs on their journey towards international expansion.

According to the study, the main areas in which Spain has potential to play an essential role in relationships between Asia and Latin America are: tourism, cultural and educational exchanges, renewable energy, infrastructures and construction.

Barcelona stands out thanks to its geographic location and its infrastructures

Within this context, Barcelona plays an important role as a logistics centre thanks to Port de Barcelona, which distributes an increasing volume of Asian products, and as a hub for the flights belonging to Singapore Arilines flying on towards Latin America. Also highlighting Catalonian companies that act as a commercial or production liaison, (Farmaegara, Miguel Torres S.A.) and can manage to involve sectors as strategic as is that of R&D (Ficosa Internacional).

Aside from its geographic location and infrastructure, the report underlines the promotion Barcelona carries out for industries based on innovation and knowledge, as well as the actions which are developed by the city council with a view to attract foreign investments.

Barcelona Airport’s Middle East regional carriers have profitable outlook for 2012
2012-03-30 08:25:39

IATA’s latest 2012 industry forecast has airlines in the Middle East as the big winners, with the annual profit forecast for the region's airlines revised from USD300 million to USD500 million. It does come with a caveat though: a spike in oil prices could turn the forecast profit into a USD200 million loss for the region’s airlines.

In 2011, airlines in the Middle East reported a combined annual profit of approximately USD1 billion, according to IATA’s estimate. Despite the regional disruptions and spiralling price of oil, passengers in the region kept flying and Middle Eastern carriers increasingly developed their links with the rest of the world.

As they have been for years, financial results for Middle Eastern carriers were unevenly spread across the region.

Chinese and Japanese firms look more and more to Europe
2012-03-30 08:35:21

Chinese companies are moving to take over more and more European companies, according to research by Ernst & Young Global Ltd released on Wednesday.

Ernst & Young reported that Japan and China led the pack in making investments in Europe in the first two months of 2012, completing nearly $11 billion in deals. They were followed by South Korea, India and Australia.

Michel Driessen, partner at Ernst & Young, said Asian investors' interest in Europe has increased since 2010 and is likely to become even bigger in 2012.

"It is clear that Asian investors understand the financial backdrop in Europe at present and are keen to take advantage of this situation," Driessen said.

"Pricing, exchange rates and deal dynamics are all working to the benefit of Asian investors at present. It is the right time to acquire for growth in Europe."

The deals pertained to a wide variety of businesses, most of them being in the industrial product, computer service and software, financial service and chemical industries.

According to Ernst & Young, Asian companies should try to expand in Europe because that will allow them to immediately gain loyal customers and quickly increase the size of their market shares.

Europe will also give them a solid means of expanding further into other international markets.

Ernst & Young also said Asian companies hope to enter Germany, Britain and other countries to pursue more research and development and innovation, thereby strengthening their products and improving their ability to conduct research and development in the Asia-Pacific region.

The combination of these influences has driven the Asia-Pacific region to increasingly turn to Europe to make acquisitions.

During the past five years, Australia has become the lead buyer in this area, accounting for 22 percent of the foreign merger and acquisition deals that were completed in Europe. It was followed by India, with 19 percent, China, with 18 percent, and Japan, with 18 percent.

Japan has spent more on mergers and acquisitions in Europe than any other market in the Asia-Pacific region, having invested about $79 billion since 2007.

Driessen said the ongoing financial and economic situation in Europe is giving Asia-Pacific companies opportunities to make interesting purchases at attractive prices.

CSC will create up to one hundred jobs with a centre of excellence in Barcelona
2012-03-30 10:40:13

The subsidiary of the North American multinational has invested a million euros in the project, which aims to provide a ‘cloud computing’ solution service throughout Europe.

Barcelona is monopolizing the interest of large technological groups. These companies choose the Catalan capital to install their research centres (R+D+i). The North American multinational CSC will invest a million euros in the creation this year of a centre of excellence for cloud computing in the Catalan capital, which will also work for customers throughout Europe.

Víctor Cuatrecasas, managing director of CSC Catalonia, believes the project will generate up to a hundred new jobs. In the initial stage, the centre of excellence will have a workforce of thirty employees, which will be completed subsequently in a second stage, until reaching a hundred people. The company does not yet have a clear idea of the location of the centre and is studying several options, admitted Cuatrecasas. A likely alternative is that the project will take shape in the facilities belonging to the office of the Catalan delegation (located in the Diagonal of Barcelona), where there is room for thirty people, says the director, and later on they will move to another building.

With this project, CSC joins Fujitsu, Colt and Altran, among others, in the installation of centres for research or solution development in Barcelona. The three head offices coincide in that they will work with European customers and in the importance of the Catalan capital in promoting their business.

CSC, with its head office in Falls Church (Virginia, USA), has been present in Spain since 1991 with over 950 employees divided between the offices of Barcelona (where there are 200 people), Madrid and Asturias, where they opened a centre of technological excellence in 2003. On a national scale, the firm reached a turnover of 44 million euros last year. Worldwide, they have 93,000 workers in 90 countries. In 2010, CSC had a turnover of 16,200 million dollars (12,273 million euros).

Strategic plan

The centre of excellence is one of the “challenges” of CSC in Catalonia, according to Cuatrecasas, which wishes to continue an innovative line with cloud computing solutions. The technological firm will not embark on this adventure alone (although it does want to lead it), but rather aims to find other partners to collaborate with. The firm is not considering any takeover or fusion in the short term.

The strategic plan of CSC in Catalonia has other challenges such as the “verticalization of its services”, said Cuatrecasas. “We want people who are specialized in each of our industries”, he added. The financial, food, pharmaceutical and, especially, health industries, are CSC’s main customers.

80% of the company’s customers are firms (such as Cepsa, Gas Natural or Thyssenkkrupp), whereas the rest belong to the Public Administration (the Principality of Asturias and Barcelona City Council, among others). In this sense, public tenders (like the current one concerning ICT services for the Catalan Regional Government), “are a very important area of growth for us”, stated Víctor Cuatrecasas.

Adelte wins a 16.5 million euro contract in the Port of Hong Kong
2012-03-30 11:02:43

Adelte Group, a company specializing in the design and manufacture of boarding bridges for airports and ports, has won a contract of 16.4 million euros to equip the new shipping terminal Kai Tak, in Hong Kong (China).

Team Ports & Maritime, a subsidiary of Adelte, will supply five boarding bridges for cruise passengers after winning the tender launched by the Government of the old British Colony. This, according to Adelte, is the largest contract of this type in the port industry.

The boarding bridges, which will be manufactured at Team’s factory in Monzón (Huesca), will enable both large cruise ships and smaller pleasure craft to dock in Kai Tak. With the new terminal, designed by the British architect Norman Foster, Hong Kong aims to become the leading cruise port in Asia.

The fingers will have external lighting and photovoltaic plaques to produce electricity, and will be conditioned so as to enable access to people with reduced mobility.

Once manufactured, the boarding bridges will be assembled at Barcelona Port, where they will set sail for Hong Kong. They are expected to reach the Chinese city in the middle of 2013.

“This contract consolidates Team in the region”, indicated yesterday Josep Maria Bartomeu, CEO of Adelte Group. Last September, Bartomeu, who is Vice-president for sport of FC Barcelona, allowed the venture capital firm Baring Private Equity Partners into the shareholding of the company, with a 48% share. The Bartomeu family – which founded the group in 1992 – now holds 52% of the capital, together with minority shareholders. Baring also purchased 48% of EFS–Equipo Facilty Services, a firm linked to Adelte and also controlled by the Bartomeu family.

The incorporation of the new shareholder coincides with the return of Adelte to the business of airport fingers, five years after selling this line of activity to the multinational ThyssenKrupp.

Changi Airport linked with BCN Airport with Singapore Airlines to launch cargo incentive program
2012-04-02 07:31:11

Singapore’s Changi Airport Group is launching an S$15 million initiative to boost airfreight volumes in the Asia-Pacific. Beginning April 1, freighters landing at Changi Airport will receive a 20-percent fee rebate, while cargo tenants leasing property at the Changi Airfreight Center will enjoy rental rebates of up to 20 percent.

In a press release, Changi officials explained that the Changi Airport Group Initiative, or CAGi, is designed to offset the 4.8 percent, year-over-year, loss the Asia-Pacific airfreight sector experienced in 2011. Changi cited escalating fuel prices and economic problems throughout the U.S. and eurozone as contributors to this decline.

Even so, Changi Airport saw modest freight gains last year, welcoming 1.87 million tonnes of cargo. Although this translates to a 2.8-percent, year-over-year, increase, it’s a figure that’s only on par with 2008 levels, according to the press release.

Changi officials hope CAGi will provide incentives for cargo carriers to operate at the airport. Passenger carriers will also benefit from the initiative, albeit on a lesser level, obtaining 5-percent rebates on landing fees.

“Other CAGi incentives remain in place to support exciting airlines’ traffic growth at Changi Airport and the launch of services to new destinations, as well as to attract new airlines,” according to the press release.

Changi Airport Group CEO Lee Seow Hiang believes these rebates will benefit cargo and passenger carriers tremendously. “We are, hence, fully committed to strengthening our relationship with them through ‘win-win’ partnerships and support programs that will enable our partners and us to overcome the challenges ahead together and sustain our mutual growth for the long-term.”

Singapore Airlines has become in 2011 the biggest air cargo operator according to Aena figures in Barcelona Airport and plays a key role linking Singapore with Sao Paulo via Barcelona.
