Passengers on routes to EU countries were the ones that grew most in June, with an increase of 8% over last year; followed by users on intercontinental routes, with an increase of 3.6%. There was a notable increase of 1.2% in the number of passengers on domestic routes.

Barcelona, July 13, 2015 - LATAM Airlines Group, the leading airline group in South America, today announced the launch of its new direct flight operated by the airline TAM, which will link Barcelona to Sao Paulo from October with a frequency of three times a week. The presentation was held at Barcelona-El Prat airport and was attended by the Minister of Territory and Sustainability of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Santi Vila; the Manager of Employment, Enterprise and Tourism of the Barcelona City Council, Albert de Gregorio; the President of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, Miquel Valls; and the Spain Airport Network Manager of AENA, Fernando Echegaray. LATAM Airlines Group was represented by Rodrigo Contreras, Director General for Europe, and Ignacio Blanco, Director of Marketing and External Communications for Europe.
With the addition of this new route, the company enhances the connectivity of the Group in Europe with its main hub at the airport of Guarulhos in São Paulo, one of the largest and most modern in all of South America and gateway to over 115 destinations within this continent. The new route will position Barcelona as one of the key hubs with South America, enabling travellers from all over Europe to link with the flight to São Paulo and vice versa.
More than 175,000 passengers fly annually between Barcelona and Brazil. This means that more than 30% of traffic between Spain and Brazil has its origin or destination in Barcelona. Passenger traffic between Spain and Brazil has increased by 5% on average in the last five years (CAGR 2010-14), while Barcelona has grown 8% annually in the same period, significantly ahead of other Spanish airports. The strength of these figures fully justifies the interest of LATAM Airlines Group in the potential of this direct route between
Barcelona and Sao Paulo.
The flight will operate with a Boeing 767 aircraft that ensures optimum travel experience, combining comfort with a wide range of on board entertainment which provides state-of-the-art individual screens in every seat. Likewise, passengers traveling in Premium Business Class seats will have full flat, reclining 180 degrees, seats with 15% more space.

China will invest 500 billion Yuan ($80 billion) in 193 major domestic aviation projects this year, the country’s aviation regulator said, to meet growing demand from travelers and to bolster growth as the world’s second-largest economy slows.
The announcement comes amid a wider effort by Beijing to increase overall infrastructure spending after economic growth slowed to a six-year low in the first quarter. The country’s state planner has so far in the first six months approved billions of dollars of railway and airport projects.

He added that Chinese airlines now fly 553 routes to 127 cities in 51 nations, and plan to add 83 more routes over the summer and autumn period. Government planners estimate China’s airports will increase to 240 by 2020 from around 200.
Of the 500 billion yuan investment, 200 billion yuan will be spent on 51 projects in Chinese cities such as Urumqi and Kunming which are along routes marked out in China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative, Li said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping launched in 2013 an initiative to increase trade and extend China’s influence with Central, West and South Asia as well as Europe and Africa through a series of projects ranging from oil and gas pipelines to railways.
In line with the strategy, Li also said that the government plans to expand China’s traffic rights with Central, East and West Asian countries “at an appropriate time” which would pave the way for new routes.

The service of the O3 alliance formed by shipping companies UASC, CMA, CGM and China Shipping which stops in Barcelona now connects India and the Middle East with North America from East to West.
The Port of Barcelona received the stop-off of the containership ‘Al Rawdah’ affiliated to the MINA/MAX2 service of the Ocean Three alliance formed by UASC, CMA, CGM and China Shipping. This stop-over is an improvement in the connectivity of the Port of Barcelona as the service which to date only operated in Barcelona from East to West (from India to North America) now also does so from West to East (from North America to India).
The MINA service (Middle East – Indian Subcontinent – North America)/MAX2 makes a regular trip once a week and connects the ports of: New York, Norfolk, Savannah, Miami, Tangier, Valencia, Barcelona, Livorno, Genoa and Malta, Eastwards; and Khor Fakkan, Jebel Ali, Port Qasim, Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Jeddah, Port Said East, Livorno, La Spezia, Genoa, Fos, Barcelona, Valencia and Tangier Westwards.
This new service strengthens the Port of Barcelona as a distribution hub to the hinterland of cargo from North America bound for the Middle East and India.

The transport sector will be one of the main stars of the International Logistics and material Handling Exhibition (SIL 2015), which this year is celebrating its 17th edition from 9 to 11 June in the Montjuïc-Plaça Espanya Exhibtion Grounds of Fira de Barcelona. The 17th edition of the International Logistics and Material Handling Exhibition will also host the 13th Mediterranean Logistics and Transport Forum, the 8th Mediterranean Ports Summit and the 4th Latin American Logistics and Transport Summit, where major current issues in the sector will be discussed and answers and solutions will be provided.
The airline said the move would “dramatically change the competitive dynamics of the air cargo market in Australia.”
Virgin Australia Cargo group executive Merren McArthur said: “Virgin Australia will now actively compete in the domestic and short-haul international cargo market for the first time.”
She said the carrier would leverage the “Virgin Australia customer-focused culture to deliver exceptional service at competitive rates.”
Virgin Australia Cargo has also launched a state of the art IT system, which will help the carrier optimize cargo capacity as well as providing tracking and customized reporting services for customers.
Virgin Australia’s existing exclusive arrangement with Toll Group will cease June 30, but its “long-standing partnership with Virgin Atlantic for the sale and management of cargo capacity on Virgin Australia’s long-haul services” will continue.
