Hub in Barcelona as of the 2014 summer season and new connections

During the event, the company announced the opening of a base in Barcelona from the 2014 summer season, which will include three aircraft. . Hundreds of new jobs will be created locally.

Likewise, Norwegian Air Shuttle reported its expectation to hire maintenance services in Barcelona and is assessing the possibility of conducting training courses for cabin crew.

In terms of operations, the company will increase frequencies on its current routes out of Barcelona-El Prat Airport, as well as add new connections to Berlin, Hamburg, Warsaw and Sandefjord-Torp, beginning in the 2014 summer season. According to statements made by its CEO, this new operation will entail a 40% increase in the availability of seats per week compared to the 2013 summer season.

Onset of long haul flights from Barcelona-El Prat Airport as of 2016

Norwegian Air Shuttle is the first European low cost company to begin long haul operations. In fact, last summer (2013) it began flying to Bangkok and to New York from Scandinavia.

According to BjØrn Kjos, Norwegian Air Shuttle plans to continue expanding this type of operations and has confirmed that, in the expectation of a positive market trend, expects to operate new long haul flights out of Barcelona-El Prat Airport as of 2016. Moreover, they have declared their intention of opening flights from Barcelona with two or three destinations using a Boeing 787-8.

During the event, all the institutions stressed the importance of the great commitment of Norwegian Air Shuttle in making Barcelona-El Prat Airport increasingly better connected in international terms. The company offers connectivity between its flights, a fact which will strengthen the airport’s connecting traffic and will favour the arrival of tourists and the small and medium enterprises that use its services.

The new connections as a magnet for international investment projects

The scope of this project and the quality and service characteristics of the product demonstrate the attraction of Barcelona for great foreign investment projects and significantly reinforces the positioning and international image of the city, both in terms of business and tourism.

The main economic indicators and international rankings ratify the role of Barcelona as one of the economic engines of the country and position the Catalan capital as a business friendly setting, both for entrepreneurs and foreign investors who commit to Barcelona and Catalonia as an attractive destination for business and setting up economic activity. In this sense, it is worth noting that during the first half of 2013, Catalonia received a volume of productive foreign investment of 1,665.5 million euros, a fact which reveals a year on year increase of 42.2%.

Along these lines, the BARDC continues to work towards increasing its links with the key destinations in its Strategic Plan, namely Japan, South Korea, China, India, the United States and Mexico.

Besides, as happened with Norwegian Air Shuttle, the BARDC is working to keep up dynamic continued contact with the intercontinental airlines operating or intending to operate in Barcelona, by offering them support and promoting their activity.
