Emirates Airlines offers a daily flight Barcelona-Mexico City
- Emirates will offer the daily flight Barcelona-Mexico City with a Boeing 777-200LR, capacity for over 300 passengers and a large hold for cargo.
- The new international connection is part of the 5 cities target of the BARDC Strategic Plan 2018-2019.
- This route will increase the flow of traffic by over 90,000 passengers.
- The ties between both capitals are very important at both the corporate level, given that the Mexican market is the leading destination for air cargo from Barcelona, and also for the community of Mexican residents and tourist flows.
Barcelona, December 9, 2019 – Barcelona-Mexico City is the new international connection to start operating today at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat airport. The destination is part of the 5 cities target of the BARDC Strategic Plan 2018-2019 (Barcelona Air Development Committee, the airport promotion organisation made up of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, the Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council, and AENA). Last year, the connection between Barcelona and Mexico City had a movement of 90,000 indirect passengers. Now, Barcelona will have two companies covering this route.
For BARDC members it is a great satisfaction to announce another connection between Barcelona and Mexico City from Barcelona. This is more great news to put Barcelona and its region of influence among the cities with the best connectivity in the world.
Emirates Airlines is a middle eastern company with a presence all over the world, and it has decided to carry out a very complex operation with the approval of both governments. The Boeing 777-200LR aircraft will offer a large capacity to the cargo sector between the two capitals and Dubai.

Strong international trade ties
The commercial relationship between Catalonia and Mexico has always been important. Mexico is the leading destination for air cargo exports from Barcelona. Specifically, Barcelona’s air exports to Mexico City during 2017 were 3,752 tonnes, representing 12% of total Spanish exports.
In addition, during the last few years trade relations between the two cities have steadily increased, to the point of achieving a record figure of € 1,338 M in 2017. The main sectors that export to Mexico are vehicles (19%), machinery (13.4%), and textiles (9.1%). Quantitatively, Catalan exports represent 29.1% of exports from Spain to Mexico.
With regard to imports, the Mexican market has also increased in recent years, reaching the figure of €540 M in 2017, 13.3% of imports to Spain from Mexico. The main import sectors are fuels (31.2%), vehicles (27%), and chemical products (7%).
In Mexico, there are 757 subsidiaries of 373 Catalan companies, and in Catalonia there are 59 Mexican subsidiaries of 25 Mexican companies.
The Mexican community in Catalonia and Mexican outbound tourism
25% (6,558) of the 24,000 Mexican residents in the State live in Barcelona, practically the same volume as in Madrid. The main profiles are students, qualified professionals, and/or relatives, according to data from the INE 2018 (National Statistics Institute).
Likewise, over 450,000 Mexican tourists a year arrive in Spain, 86,000 of whom (19.1%) had Catalonia as the main destination, with an average expenditure of € 2,500 per person (INE, 2017).
