Mobile World Congress 2017 hits a new record, with 108,000 visitors

Mobile World Congress 2017 closed its doors with a record number of 108,000 visitors, 7% more than last year.

Mobile World Congress 2017 closed its doors with a record number of 108,000 visitors, 7% more than last year. The gender gap in attendance narrowed in this edition, with 23% female participation, a figure 14% up on 2016. Visitors from 208 countries and 2,300 companies in the mobile industry and adjacent sectors such as the automotive industry, finance and health led four days of international meetings in Barcelona.

“The Mobile World Congress has strengthened its position as the most important event in the mobile communications industry,” said GSMA CEO John Hoffman. “We have been able to attend conferences given by big names in the sector and discover the technologies, products and initiatives that will define the path the industry will follow in the coming years”, he added.

Other MWC figures, according to sources within the organization, are: 55% senior executive visitors, more than 6,100 CEOs, and 3,500 media outlets. The economic impact, according to an analysis conducted by the organizers, was 465 million euros and 13,200 temporary jobs.

The increase in female participation in the MWC coincides with the first year in which the GSMA Congress has had a space, Women4Tech, in which its participants analysed the issues that are part of gender diversity in the mobile industry.

Over 11,000 young people visited the Youth Mobile Festival (YoMo), another novelty of the Mobile World Congress this year. This new event aimed to inspire young people to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Major mobile phone manufacturers such as Huawei, LG, Samsung, and Nokia unveiled new features at a congress that is increasingly cross-cutting. The NEXTech pavilion hosted this year hosted the most innovative companies with areas dedicated devoted to graphene, the Internet of Things, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

There is already a date for next year’s edition. The next Mobile World Congress, to be held in Barcelona at least until 2023, will take place from 26 February to 1 March.
