Full service airlines in Asia have opened 27 long haul destinations since 2007. Just under half (13) have been opened since 2014.

Some Southeast Asian airlines are (arguably, wisely) focused on intra-regional growth; Garuda has not opened a new long haul point since 2014, and Vietnam Airlines has not done so since 2011. Both plan to open flights to the US West Coast in the medium term.

They also are refining their existing networks and improving the operation: Garuda will make its London flight nonstop in both directions (Jakarta runway restrictions did not allow the takeoff weight needed to fly nonstop to London, so Garudatransited in Singapore, only on the outbound) while Vietnam Airlines is refleeting with 787s and A350s.

Other airlines, including Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways, are restructuring, and must contend with the massive change brought by Gulf airlines.
