JT Barcelona El Prat  Airport closes 2020 with 12.7M passengers – 75% down on last year
  • The Covid-19 health pandemic has severely affected the air sector; in Europe, there has been a 44% reduction in operations in 2020 compared to 2019.
  • Barcelona remains in the top 10 European airports with the most passengers and the seventh city in a number of origin-destination passengers.
  • Some recovery in activity is expected as of summer season 2021.

Barcelona, January 13, 2021 - In 2020, the airline industry faced the worst crisis in recent decades due to the Covid-19 pandemic, triggering an unprecedented situation with a global impact.

At the level of European airports, Barcelona ranks tenth in the number of passengers (in the same order of magnitude of decrease as other European airports compared to the previous period). Passengers connecting to Barcelona have decreased 5 points compared to last year and now account for only 1% of total passengers.

Barcelona airport closed 2020 with 12.7M passengers, -75% compared to the previous year. During the summer months of 2020, a small upturn later decreased in the last months of the year.

Domestic traffic (-46% compared to 2019) has withstood the drop in passenger numbers better than European and intercontinental levels (-74% and -71% respectively, compared to 2019) due to the current restrictions to travel between countries.

In general, in Barcelona, the number of destinations fell by 40%, while in destinations that maintained normality, frequencies were reduced. The number of airlines has dropped 50%. (Source: CAPA 2nd week of December 2020 with respect to December 2019).

Outlook:

According to Eurocontrol forecasts with different assumptions, even if there is effective vaccination, 2019 levels will not be recovered until 2024.

Specifically from the 2021 summer season, which starts next March, some intercontinental connections are expected to be able to recover, especially in North America and Asia.
