Barcelona, June 26, 2024:
Air China recovers the Barcelona - Shanghai route as of August 27th. Due to Air China's great interest in Catalan, the company will operate the route with 3 weekly frequencies, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
The flight will take off from Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport at 12:40 pm to arrive at Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) at 06:50 am the following day. The return flights will leave Shanghai at 12:45 am to land in the Catalan capital at 08:05 am the same day.
These schedules have been designed to benefit both business and holiday passengers thanks to the large number of connections the company offers within China and internationally to major Asian cities.
It will operate the route with an Airbus A350-900 with 3 cabin classes: Business with 32 seats; Premium Economy with 24 seats with a seat width of 96.5cm and a 20cm recline; and Economy with 255 seats with a seat width of 78cm and a 15cm recline. The aircraft has WIFI connection in all classes of service.
As reflected in the Strategic Plan of the Barcelona Air Routes Development Committee (BARDC) 2024-2025, the recovery of routes to China is a fundamental objective, in order to increase Barcelona's connectivity and foster synergies and links with industry and companies in Catalonia and China.
The recovery of connections with China suspended during the pandemic due to COVID-19 has been a great challenge for Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport.
In 2019, the Air China Shanghai route recorded 39,534 direct passengers and 107,587 indirect passengers. In 2023, after the incorporation of the direct route from Beijing in June, 4,752 direct passengers and 21,982 indirect passengers were transported, whereas, to Shanghai, there were 54,668 indirect passengers (Data source: O&D/MIDT/Sabre). The recovery of the Barcelona - Shanghai route by Air China is the result of the cooperation and great teamwork carried out since 2020 between the airline and the institutions that make up the BARDC, in collaboration with the Catalan Tourism Agency, ACCIO, and Tourism of Barcelona. As part of this work, institutional and business missions to Shanghai were organized to highlight the need to recover this strategic route for Barcelona/Catalonia.
With the return of this route, Air China completes 2024 its recovery in Barcelona, even with an increase in the capacity of the Beijing route.
China's flag carrier is once again backing Barcelona, offering connecting routes from its hubs in Beijing and Shanghai to Asia, North America, the Middle East, Europe, and Australia. Meanwhile, it is worth remembering that the company is the majority owner of the China National Aviation Holding Company.
