• This is 22% more than the previous year
The 54 intercontinental routes operating at Barcelona-El Prat Josep Tarradellas Airport in 2024 carried 3.93 million passengers, 22.4% more than in 2023 and 9% more than in 2019, before the pandemic.
These figures were announced this Thursday afternoon during the 2025 General Council of the Airport Air Route Development Committee (BARDC), which is the organisation that aims to promote the creation of intercontinental routes and the improvement of current connections. It is made up of the Government of Catalonia, the Barcelona City Council, Aena, and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce.
These figures serve to consolidate the positioning of the territory as a long-stay and quality destination for visitors, while favouring the growth of international trade and the strengthening of corporate relations.
The airport has added seven new intercontinental routes in the last year: Barcelona-Shanghai, Barcelona-Hong Kong, Barcelona-Riad, Barcelona-Dallas Fort Worth, Barcelona-Tegucigalpa, Barcelona-Tetuan, and Barcelona-Essaouira.
The next targets are the Lima, Delhi, and Tokyo routes, which are considered key in the Committee's Strategic Plan.
The General Council discussed the start of a new phase for the committee, focused on expanding into new markets and increasing frequencies. This evolution is favoured, on the supply side, by the potential opened up by the commitment of the IAG Group (especially LEVEL and VUELING airlines) to Barcelona; by the new narrow-body aircraft models, such as the Airbus 321 XLR, which generate new opportunities for 6–8-hour routes; and by the growing dynamism of the market. On the demand side, there are historically unserved and emerging destinations; the potential offered by the deseasonalisation of demand to take advantage of the available infrastructure; and air cargo, which represents a key complementary sector, especially for the Catalan industrial sector.
