Barcelona airport has almost tripled the number of transcontinental flights in 12 years
Since 2005, the airport of Prat has gone from having 17 intercontinental routes to 44, with an especially important jump over the past two years, in which fifteen new routes without stopovers have been incorporated, according to data collected by the Air Route Development Committee of Barcelona (CDRA).
Three of the factors that explain this evolution are: the creation of the Air Route Development Committee, made up of the Generalitat, Barcelona City Council, the Chamber of Commerce and AENA-, the opening up of direct routes to Asia and the commitment of Norwegian and Level to offer low cost long-haul flights from Prat.
With regard to pending issues, the experts highlight the connection with Africa, an improvement of the public transport between the airport and the city, and the consolidation of the long-haul routes.
