Barcelona is the main gateway of Spain for traffic to Asia, Africa and Middle East.

11 new intercontinental destinations in 2017

Barcelona is the main Spanish entry and exit point for traffic from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, above Madrid and the rest of Spain. However, for South America and North America Madrid is still the main origin or destination.

Barcelona grows in all intercontinental regions above the Spanish average, gaining market share. Strong growth towards North America due to the new Norwegian and LEVEL routes, as well as the capacity and frequency increases of the American airlines. Latin America continues its moderate growth with the LATAM Airlines and LEVEL bet. The Asia-Pacific market share also increases; Barcelona already represents more than 44% of the Spanish origin and destination traffic thanks to the opening of the new Asian connections.

New routes to Shanghai, Chicago, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Punta Cana, San Francisco, Seoul, Teheran, Fez, Fort Lauderdale, New York, Havana and Boston, as well as a cargo operations increase from Emirates and Turkish Airlines. These increases represent 11 new destinations and 16 new routes from Barcelona airport. The Barcelona route map has extended significantly. By the end of 2017, it already includes 44 long-haul destinations. Most of them are progressively expanding to become daily flights, and they are becoming good for business and cargo.
