Institutional and business relations between Barcelona/Catalonia and Shanghai are excellent for fostering economic growth in both regions.
The twinning protocol between Barcelona and Shanghai was formalised on 31 October 2001. An addendum was signed on 24 July 2006, specifying the priority areas of collaboration.
The objectives of this twinning are to exchange information and collaborate on issues of mutual interest, especially in economic development, urban planning, environmental programmes, tourism, culture and sports.
Previously, in 1989, Shanghai and Barcelona had signed a memorandum of understanding, which already detailed many of the fields that were the subject of collaboration in the twinning protocol.
Collaboration between Barcelona and Shanghai is continuous and fluid. In 2010 Barcelona was present at the Shanghai Expo.
Several visits have been exchanged between delegations from both cities and it can be said that the relationship with Shanghai represents for Barcelona a gateway to Asia.
Among some of the participants, there were speeches by Mr. HuaYuan , Vice Mayor of Shanghai support the invest in #shanghai - #catalonia; The Honourable Minister for Enterprise, Mr Roger Torrent, Government of Catalonia and the 3rd Deputy Mayor Mr JordiValls, Barcelona City Council and BARDC member, working together to regain air connectivity #Shanghai - #Barcelona & invest #Shanghai-#Barcelona; and seeking talent and investment.
