The routes to North America are a priority according to the strategic objectives of the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (BARDC). Within the Strategic Plan 2024-2025 of the BARDC, the Barcelona - Boston (BOS) route is considered a route that will further stimulate this large market, and the BARDC has given it its support. In quantitative terms, in 2024, total indirect O&D traffic between the United States and Barcelona exceeded 1.5 million passengers. The Boston hub provides east coast connectivity to the United States. The indirect O&D demand between Barcelona and Boston was more than 62,000 passengers in 2024. (Source: MIDT Sabre)
Boston is home to a wide range of companies that are influential in technology, biotechnology, finance, and health, many of which are closely aligned with the strengths of Barcelona and the region of Catalonia. Technological firms such as HubSpot and Wayfair, and biotech leaders such as Moderna and Vertex Pharmaceuticals, reflect Boston’s strong innovation ecosystem, which resonates with Barcelona’s growing technology and life sciences sector. Financial institutions such as State Street and Liberty Mutual also echo the growing fintech and insurance hubs in Catalonia. In addition, both regions have top-level research institutions and hospitals, such as Mass General Brigham in Boston and Hospital Clínic and Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, which enhances potential collaboration in health innovation. This shared approach to research, entrepreneurship, and sustainability creates promising opportunities for synergies in academic, business, and public-private partnerships between the two cities.
