Dubai-based Emirates Airline is expected to take delivery of its first Rolls-Royce Trent 900-powered Airbus A380 later this week following what the carrier is referring to as a last-minute technical glitch with the engine.

Emirates president Tim Clark said last month that the airline was not prepared to accept the aircraft until unspecified technical issues with the engine were resolved.

Rolls-Royce scored a coup in April 2015 when it announced the largest non-military order in its history, wresting the Emirates A380 engine contract away from the GE Aviation/Pratt & Whitney joint venture Engine Alliance GP7000. The US-built engine was chosen for the first 90 of Emirates’ A380s, the last few of which are close to being delivered. The next 50 Emirates A380s will be powered by the Trent 900.

The initial delivery of the Trent-powered version to Emirates had been scheduled for last week.

ATW understands that the technical problem related to the Trent 900’s turbine blades operating in the extreme temperatures and dust-laden atmosphere of the Gulf. The problem is now understood to have been resolved.

“We continue to work closely with Emirates and Airbus on the planned entry into service of the Trent-powered A380,” Rolls-Royce spokesman said. He could not confirm specific a delivery date.
