Outlook: growing Chinese airlines, but Asia has many market segments
Destination growth needs to be put in context. For example, although Korean Air has been relatively quiet over the past decade, it entered the period with more destinations outside Asia than any other airline besides Singapore Airlines. As recently as a year ago, Korean Air retained its leadership as serving more non-Asian destinations than any other peer in Asia. Now Air China has surpassed Korean Air.
In 2006 Korean Air and Singapore Airlines served the greatest number of non-Asian destinations, while two Southeast Asian, and one Northeast Asian, airlines followed. By 2017 this has shifted to China holding four of the seven largest spots.
