The Barcelona Air Routes Development Committee participates in Routes World in Bahrain to promote intercontinental connectivity
- The event, to be held from 6 to 8 October in Bahrain, is the main meeting point between airlines and airports.
- The BARDC will participate in the annual event with the aim of attracting new intercontinental destinations and improving connectivity in markets that have not yet recovered or have done so with few frequencies.
- During the summer season this year there were 53 active intercontinental destinations, with two increases in destinations, Miami and San Francisco, and one new destination, Dallas.
Barcelona, 04 October 2024 – The Barcelona Air Routes Development Committee (BARDC) will participate in the 27th edition of Routes World with the aim of establishing contacts and contributing to the recovery of intercontinental air traffic at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. The event, which will take place from 6 to 8 October in the Kingdom of Bahrain, is the main meeting point that brings together airline companies, airports, and other organisations and companies interested in the airport sector to discuss future global air routes.
Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport closed 2023 with positive figures that demonstrate a rapid recovery. This normalisation of air traffic is also being repeated in 2024 with a significant recovery in air connectivity between Barcelona and China.
This year, the Asian market, one of the most strategic for Barcelona, has recovered the connection of two destinations: Hong Kong by Cathay Pacific and Shanghai by Air China; and in the Middle East, the route to Riyadh operated by Saudia. Capacity has also been increased to North America, with Delta Air Lines increasing the New York route from 7 to 14 weekly frequencies, as well as the opening of a new route to San Francisco by United Airlines in the summer of 2024.
The institutions that make up the BARDC continue their joint efforts to support the return of aviation companies and attempt to explore personalised opportunities such as air cargo and new ad-hoc routes.
For this reason, the BARDC delegation will continue to have its own stand, as in previous editions, with the presence of its four members: the Government of Catalonia – “Aeroports de Catalunya” – Aena, Barcelona City Council, and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Catalan Tourism Agency and Barcelona Tourism Board.
An agenda of meetings to boost connectivity with the Asian market and increase frequencies and destinations with North and Latin American markets.
The BARDC's work programme for Routes World 2024 includes an agenda of meetings with airlines and airports to continue to promote air connectivity, whether by increasing frequencies on existing routes in high demand or by attracting new routes, as set out in the latest BARDC Strategic Plan 2024-2025.
It should be noted that the BARDC's objectives are aimed at connecting Barcelona with the main world centres in terms of economy, culture, tourism, business, and high social impact.
